Urban Forestry Workshop Gatineau, QC
The studio is purposely rigorous, with siting and design requirements for this urban forestry workshop as a lens for understanding some of the complex site histories. It radiates relationships between the natural and cultural histories of Canada’s peoples and the forest, and evolution of wood production in contemporary times, while keeping climate change in mind.
Finding the commonality between Murcutt and the Indigenous, freeing the ground while interacting; adopting modern materiality in the wood structure using glulam and cross laminated timber; respecting the indigenous history by preservation temporary materiality with fabric and glass finishes in the architecture; provision of paths and throughways in the landscape; and maintaining the various stages of natural and purpose growth forests.
"... the detail you sketched as a proposal for the structure is amazing! You are going in the right direction and you should do more work on it with research. Let it inform you preliminary design and envelope so your structure becomes a feature of the final design..."
